Magic Mushroom Tripping – Some things to know
Preparing – What to Consider
Safety – Before you start… Think about why you want to get high. It’s best not to use hallucinogens as a way of avoiding or coping with problems.
Find a buddy (who won’t be tripping) – Using alone can mean coping by yourself if you get injured or have a bad trip.
Plan your trip – Choose a safe, peaceful place to hang out, knowing that most trips last 8-12 hours. Talk to your friend about things you could do if you have a bad trip.
Do not even think of driving on mushrooms.
Do not mix mushrooms with alcohol or with drugs of any kind, prescription or otherwise.
Sourcing
Know your dealer – It’s best to choose someone you feel safe with and who knows about the drugs they sell.
Dosage
A low dose for tripping is often considered to be 1 gram of dried magic mushrooms. (Myself, I chose 0.5g for my first trip but to others this dosage has little to no effect, or so they say…)
If you are researching for your first trip, start low. You can always take more next time.
Leafly’s article on shroom dosing breaks it down this way:
Low dose = 1 gram, Medium dose = 1.75g, High dose = 3.5g.
Keep in mind that a high dose is said to create heavy perceptual distortions and ego dissolution. Don’t take this lightly.
Work yourself up to a higher dose slowly over a few experiences.

How to consume:
As a Tea – Almost everyone knows how to make tea. But Shroom aficionados get pretty specific about how to make magic mushroom tea properly for the best flavour and potency experience.
Rather than explain that here, I will link you to the best recipe I have found so far:
How to make magic mushroom tea that hits the spot
As Lemon Tek – What is Lemon Tekking? Lemon tek refers to letting your dose of psilocybin mushrooms sit in lemon or lime juice before consumption—essentially cooking them as the citric acid starts to break down the mushroom material.
How lemon tekking works on a chemical level is debatable (we’ll get into that later), but the general consensus among psilonauts who have tried it is that the technique concentrates your trip, making it shorter and stronger than chewing on dried fungi.
Therefore, this is a bit of an advanced technique that I wouldn’t recommend to first time journeyers.
But if you’re experienced with magic mushrooms and are looking for a way to make a small amount go further, to decrease nausea and body load, and to shorten and fundamentally change the experience, then lemon tekking might be a worthy avenue of exploration.

How long to take effect?
The effects of shrooms can usually be felt around 30 minutes after ingesting them, but it depends on how you consume them.
Fresh or dried mushrooms can be ingested on their own, mixed with food, or steeped in hot water or tea.
In tea, shrooms can kick in as fast as 5 to 10 minutes after ingestion. As a lemon tek, even faster.
How long it lasts? (Duration of Trip)
How long do the effects last? – Shroom trips typically last between 4 and 6 hours, though some people may feel effects a lot longer.
After your trip, you’re likely to have some lingering effects that can last into the next day.
Bad trips can be harder to shake off. Certain factors can make some effects linger longer and increase the likelihood of a comedown or hangover.
The factors that can affect the severity and duration of shrooms’ effects include:
- how much you take
- the mushroom species
- how you consume them
- whether you eat dried or fresh shrooms (dried ones are more potent)
- your age
- your tolerance
- your expectations and frame of mind
- having a preexisting mental health condition
- any other substances you might’ve taken
Within 24 hours, though, most people go back to feeling like themselves.

How Long do Shrooms Stay in your System?
Psilocybin — the psychedelic compound that puts the so-called “magic” in magic mushrooms, or shrooms — can stay in your system for up to 15 hours, but that’s not set in stone.
How long shrooms stay in your system depends on a lot of variables, from the species of mushroom you ingest to things like your age and body composition.
These things play into how long shrooms are detectable by a drug test, too.
